Sponsors Pull Ads From The View After Nurses Comment

Joy Behar, right, and Michelle Collins, left, speak about nurses and Miss Colorado during an episode of The View. Their comments have resulted in a backlash as sponsors are pulling support from the daytime show.

The View is seeing the dark side of their humor after sponsors Johnson & Johnson and Eggland’s Best have pulled their support in response to a flap over nurses.

After Sunday’s Miss America pageant, co-hosts Joy Behar and Michelle Collins made jokes about Miss Colorado Kelley Johnson, who appeared during the talent portion wearing nurses scrubs and giving a monologue. Come Monday, Behar said a monologue should not be a legitimate talent. Behar is a commedienne by profession, giving monologues as a part of a stand-up routine. Collins and Behar both mentioned the stethoscope around her neck, with Behar questioning why she was wearing a “doctor’s stethoscope.”

In response, nurses came out angry at the show’s comments, stating that it was apparent no one on the program knew much about nursing as a profession.

It is a NURSE stethoscope too,” said Hilary Helkenn, a nurse from California, on Facebook. “I use it to listen to a child’s lungs, so I can quickly get them to the appropriate level of care, reassuring both child and parent. I also use it to listen to our elderly loved ones, who sometimes have aging hearts that go into abnormal rhythms. It is the NURSE that usually sees the patient first, and it is often the NURSE that notifies the doctor of what is going on…Your comments denigrated our most noble profession. You owe all of the nurses of this world an apology.”

As part of damage control for the incident, the opening credits to The View on Friday followed with an announcer stating that Friday’s show would include “real-life nurses are giving us a look at the life-saving role they play every day.”

Behar then walked on set and said, “We’ve been talking a lot about nurses this week, and today The View is going to celebrate nurses.”

The efforts were too late for two of the daytime talk show’s sponsors who found the comments too much to continue backing, despite Behar and her co-hosts apologized on Tuesday. Both Johnson & Johsnon and Eggland’s Best announced they were dropping their commercials from the ABC talk show after hearing from healthcare professionals about the issue.

  1. As retired male registered nurse for over 40 years I find it both disgusting and ignorant for hosts to speak about a nurse without any knowledge of what nurses do. I personally feel very insulted by both Joy and Michelle’s comments. Maybe the next time they visit a Doctor or hospital they could take a few minutes to see what nurses do. I will no longer follow the View as I have done in the past. I would love to have the opportunity to tell them first hand what nurses lives are like. Just maybe they would appreciate nurses in the future.
